In regards to setting up devolo twin kit between a router and a cable modem, the following are the steps I took:
1. Connect 1 devolo adapter via rj45 cable to a computer, and the other one via rj45 cable to a device port on the router.
2. Install dlan configuration cd, and setup two devolo security ids. if you have any problems like no device found, then set network adapter speed to auto.
3. Next take the devolo's rj45 cable attached to the computer and plug it into the cable modem's rj45 port.
4. Remove the existing cable from the wan port on the router and plug in the existing attached devolo cable.
5. The router should connect to the cable modem. all router connected devices should have internet access as before.
In regards to setting up two different versions of devolo kits on the same electricity network, it is possible, see following screenshot from the devolo informer app.

You can get network printers from hp,brother, or lexmark. These should work with powerline networking.
